Newbie in Greenland?
Living and working in Greenland is a once-in-a-lifetime experience – for the whole family. Here you will encounter a culture and nature that goes straight to the heart. From modern staff housing to strong educational and health opportunities, we help you get a good start on your new life.
As a newcomer to Greenland, you may have many questions. We have tried to answer some of them here:
Travels
Travel between Greenland and Denmark takes between 4 and 5 hours. The flight can take place from Aalborg, Billund, or Copenhagen directly to Nuuk. From here, one can fly further to the larger cities in the rest of the country.
Housing
Greenland Bank has a number of staff housing units that can be made available for employees moving to the country. The rent is market conforming and consumption is generally at a level comparable to Danish conditions. Gas/oil is cheaper than what is known in Denmark, as the taxes here are somewhat lower than corresponding Danish conditions. In cities with hydropower (including Nuuk).
Current prices can be found here: Nukissiorfiit Priser
Daycare, school and gymnasium
There are several public daycare institutions and primary schools in Greenland. In Nuuk, there are also a few private daycare institutions as well as a free school, which is co-owned by Grønlandsbanken. We provide the opportunity for employees' children to have priority for the free school.
In Nuuk, Aasiaat, Qaqortoq, and Sisimiut, there are public high schools, which are commonly referred to as GUX. They are open to everyone who has a permanent residence at the time of application for admission.
Pets
Dogs and cats can be imported to certain parts of the country. If you are going to live north of the Arctic Circle in, for example, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, or Aasiaat, it is not allowed to import dogs. This is due to legislation regarding the protection of the Greenlandic sled dog. In other towns, it is allowed to keep dogs and cats if the housing conditions permit it. In the Greenland Bank's staff housing, it is generally allowed to keep pets.
Before you bring a dog or cat into the country, you must contact the municipality to obtain a permit. Dogs and cats must also be sterilized and vaccinated before being imported into the country.
Taxes and VAT
A flat tax is paid in Greenland. The tax varies between 42 and 44%, depending on which municipality one resides in. There is no VAT in the country, which means it is possible to get a refund of VAT on goods purchased in Denmark. This requires that the company from which one buys goods processes the VAT refund. The refund itself takes place at the tax office in the individual town no later than 3 months after the introduction of the goods.
TV, internet and mobile
Greenland has all the necessary connections to have the same opportunities for streaming etc. as one knows it in Denmark. The connections are continuously expanding and are close to the same level as in Denmark.
The price level is slightly higher than in Denmark and can be found here: www.tusass.gl
Groceries
Shopping for groceries resembles Danish conditions, albeit with slightly higher prices and is more dependent on supplies from Denmark and Europe. In recent years, more goods have come from, for example, Iceland and Asian countries, as the international influence is growing. Goods that need to be flown to the country are typically more expensive (vegetables, etc.), while, for example, meat and fish are cheaper than their counterparts in Denmark.
Doctor, dentist and hospital
The healthcare system functions a bit differently in Greenland than in Denmark. Here, there are no private practicing doctors. Instead, one must contact the local medical clinic for illness, examinations, and health checks. Medicine is available for free at the pharmacy located in the local medical clinic.
The public dentist handles all tasks related to the population's dental health. There is a single private practicing dentist in Nuuk.
If you become acutely ill, there are emergency rooms in all major cities. Healthcare services are free for citizens with Danish citizenship.
